Devlog #9

The card game me and my group played was called Burger Truck Battle. Figuring out how to play this game was a woozy because of how many specific rules there were but after a while, we just decided to play it and see how it went. The game contains a bunch of ingredient cards, customer cards, and 5 burger trucks. You start the game by giving everyone a truck to be their food truck. You then deal out seven ingredient cards to everyone and put the rest in the middle of the table in a stack next to the customer cards. The goal of the game is to get as many customers as possible by making burgers out of the cards you have in your hand. You need bun, patty, lettuce, and tomato cards to make one burger which then allows you to pick a customer card from the deck. The game goes on like that with everyone taking a turn but there are some special cards that allow you to steal other players’ customers and cards that allow you to steal them back.

The game I decided to watch a “how-to-play” video over was Ticket to Ride. This is also a bit complicated to explain but I’ll do my best. Two to five people can play this game and each player chooses a color of the train they want, and each player gets four train cards. These cards are color-coded and can only be placed on train tracks of that same color. For example, if I had three green train cards, I could only use them on a route that was green and had three spaces in between. With a huge board in front of them showing a bunch of train rails across the continent, the goal is to have the most points by having the most trains on the board. This is a turn-based game so each player can only make one move during their turn like claiming one train route. Some cards can also be wild cards which just means that they can be used on any color train track.

What I learned from both of these games is that card games are way more complicated than I thought. There is a lot you have to take into consideration when making one to make it fun and enjoyable for the players. If these games didn’t have things like wild cards or random ketchup cards that allow you to steal things from other players, the whole experience would be kind of boring. Even so, I can tell making one of these card games is going to be really hard.

This is the link to the game I watched:
